How Does it Work

Increased blood flow and testosterone.

Horny Goat Weed (also known as Epimedium or Yin Yang Huo in Chinese Medicine) has over a thousand year history as an herb with ability to enhance male erections. The odd name is due to the legend that it was first discovered when a Chinese goat herder noticed the increased copulating activities of his herd after they had grazed on the flowering plant.

The herb Horny Goat Weed has been touted as having multiple health benefits including the ability to help reduce elevated cortisol levels if this stress hormone is elevated and increase circulating levels of testosterone. Three of the most well known ways that Horny Goat Weed relates to stronger more satisfying erections are below:

#1:
A glycoside found in Horny Goat Weed called icariin has been shown to increase the blood flow and pressure in erectile tissue. How? Like sildenafil (the ED drug commonly known as Viagra) the glycoside icarrin in Horny Goat Weed, is said to be able to inhibit the activity of PDE-5. (PDE-5 is short for Phosphodiesterase Type 5: an enzyme known to restrict blood flow to various areas of the body including the penis.)

#2:The icariin in Horny Goat Weed has also been shown to increase nitric oxide levels. Nitric oxide is typically involved in dilating the smooth muscle

ERECTOGENIC AND NEUROTROPIC EFFECTS OF ICARIIN

April 17, 2012 @ 11:05 am posted by HGWcomsite

ERECTOGENIC AND NEUROTROPIC EFFECTS OF ICARIIN
For millions of men, erectile dysfunction is a serious and life changing problem. As men age, declining testosterone levels and increasing estrogen levels are not the only factors in diminished sex drive and performance.

A recent study in the Journal of Sex Medicine (Shindel AW, et al. Erectogenic and neurotrophic effects of icariin, a purified extract of horny goat weed (Epimedium spp.) in vitro and in vivo. J Sex Med. (2010)) indicates that oral dosing of Icariin, an active constituent of Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium spp) for 4 weeks may be an effective natural remedy for erectile dysfunction.

How? Icariin has been shown to potentially increase the percent of smooth muscle tissue stimulated by nitric oxide and increase the amount of nitric oxide synthase. This means that horny Goat Weed potentially relaxes the smooth muscle fibers of the penis, allowing more blood to flow into the penis resulting in engorgement and erection.

During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide release is triggered into penile tissue by the parasympathetic nervous system and by skin cells in the penis. Smooth muscles in the penis are relaxed by the nitric oxide and the specialized tissues of corpus cavernosum and corpus spongiosum are allowed to engorge with blood to achieve erection. Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) is responsible for relaxing penile arteries to encourage blood flow to the penis. At the same time, blood is temporarily prohibited from leaving the penis allowing it to stay erect for a period of time. Erectile dysfunction can be treated by increasing the availability of nitric oxide and decreasing the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
Many of the common prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction work by inhibiting the degradation of (cGMP). Some natural remedies which are also believed to be beneficial in treating erectile dysfunction include arginine, yohimbe, and panax ginseng. Arginine is an amino acid used by the body to produce the nitric acid. Yohimbe and panax ginseng are two botanicals which have been used for centuries to enhance sexual performance. Yohimbe functions to prevent the smooth muscle contraction that reduces penile blood flow and decreases erection. Panax Ginseng functions to increase the release of nitric acid in erectile tissue. While the study above focused on the effects of Icariin alone many products combine several natural ingredients in an effort to support these effects.
